Lighting and the choice of lights for the kitchen

How to light the kitchen with ambient, functional and accent lights

Let’s cast the spotlight on the kitchen, where it’s not just the oven that heats up, but also the atmosphere: find out how to create the right ambiance using correct kitchen lighting. Have you ever heard of the difference between ambient, functional and accent lights? Then read on!

Ambient kitchen lighting

Ambient lighting is the main source of light in a room and creates a general uniform and comfortable level of illumination in a space. It therefore needs to be quite bright, but also diffused to avoid excess shadows.

In the kitchen, this type of light can come from ceiling lamps, suspension lamps or spotlights recessed into the ceiling, the aim of which is essentially to provide enough light to move around safely and clearly see the entire kitchen space. If you just don’t know where to begin, browse the Jeometrica catalogue for inspiration as to the design and layout of all the “J Lamp” lamps.

Functional lighting

As the name suggests, functional lighting is focused on the kitchen work areas, in other words where the activities requiring the most attention are carried out, such as food preparation, cooking or reading recipes. This type of lighting is generally more intense and direct. An example? Just think of midway lights, or suspension lamps above the kitchen island or even adjustable spotlights, strategically positioned above the main work areas.

Accent light points

Have you curated your kitchen furniture with precision? You can resort to accent lights to emphasise specific architectural features, such as alcoves or ceilings with exposed beams, or decorative details in your kitchen composition, such as the cabinet finish or even a shelf. Accent lighting is generally obtained by playing with stronger/more direct lights or different coloured lights: how about fitting coloured LED and dimmable lights, to adjust the brightness as need be? Your guests will approve!
