Advice and tips for proper maintenance

What is the best way of extending the life of a dishwasher or refrigerator, without spending money on spare parts?
The answer is very simple:careful daily maintenance which can prevent all kinds of problems.
Here is a step-by-step guide to looking after your kitchen “helpers”.

Hobs, especially steel models, do not get on particularly well with water. You should therefore always dry it in order to prevent limescale marks from forming.

A good start is half the battle

To avoid early malfunctioning, or to avoid having to replace certain parts, there are two things you can do before and immediately after purchasing your appliance.
First, place your trust in a good brand when making this investment.
The higher the quality of your oven or refrigerator, the longer it will last.
Next, carefully read the instruction manual.
There are, in fact, precise procedures for the first time the appliance is switched on, which could really make a difference in the future.

Ovens, hobs and microwaves

Hobs, especially steel models, do not get on particularly well with water.
You should therefore always dry it in order to prevent limescale marks from forming.
If, during cooking, you see yellow flames, you should clean the small holes with a toothpick, otherwise dangerous toxic fumes may form.
Oven maintenance, on the other hand, is minimal: simply clean it once a year immediately after it has been used, while the walls are still warm.
The process should involve wiping with a sponge soaked in warm water and neutral detergent.
Cleaning the microwave is even easier.
Place a bowl containing water and lemon juice inside and run the appliance at maximum power for at least two minutes.
This will dissolve grime, making it easier to remove.

Two notes on dishwashers

Always remember to make sure there is enough salt and clean the filter regularly to remove dirt.
These two quick and easy steps could help to prevent malfunctioning.
To prevent the drain outlet from becoming blocked, always remove large and coarse food residues by carefully rinsing plates and cookware before putting them in the dishwasher.

Long-lasting refrigerators

This appliance should be positioned away from sources of heat and direct sunlight, and should not be pushed right up against the wall.
The coil on the rear should be cleaned every 4/5 months.
If you notice excessive ice forming in the freezer, especially if you have a “no-frost” refrigerator, something is not right.
You should defrost it immediately (this should be done at least once a year in any case).
If the problem persists, check the rubber seals regularly.
This problem is actually primarily caused by the door not being shut properly.
